WHY CARBOHYDRATES ARE NOT GOOD FOR MY DOG?
Our dog’s metabolism is not made to assimilate carbs in large quantities. Because of their short instestine, dogs don’t digest carbs as well as humans and this can lead to several health issues. Hence the importance of high quality protein such as SeaDNA 100% seal meat treats!
WHAT ARE THE MAIN SOURCES OF CARBOHYDRATES?
The main sources of carbohydrate in dog kibble or treats come mainly from ingredients of plant origin:
- Cereals (wheat, corn, oat, millet, rice, etc.)
- Vegetables (cabbage, beans, zucchini, carrots, etc.)
- Legumes (lentils, peas, chickpeas, soya beans, etc.)
- Fruits (apples, pears, etc.)
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH CARBS?
Since carbohydrates come from plant-based ingredients and some dogs do not tolerate carbs very well, it can lead to high levels of insulin, like for humans. In the long run, this can cause serious problems for our poor pets:
- Chronic inflammation
- Cardiovascular illnesses
- Yeasts on the skin (scratches)
- Overweight / obesity
- Renal failure
- Premature aging
- Neurological degeneration

HOW TO CALCULATE CARBOHYDRATES IN MY DOGS TREATS?
In reality, when we talk about carbohydrates in dog treats or dog food, we are talking about everything that remains after we have removed proteins, fat, fibers, ashes (minerals) and humidity. We can therefore obtain the carbs rate with the following calculation:
Carbohydrates = 100 – Crude Protein – Crude Fat – Moisture – Crude Fiber – Ashes.
Normally, ashes levels are not indicated on the packaging of your treats but they are on average around 6% to 8%.
Here is a little comparison table between our 100% seal treats and other popular treats on the market:
|Proteil||Crude Fat||Humidity||Crude Fiber||Ashes||Total Carbs|
|SeaDNA 100% Seal Treats||79%||2%||11.6%||0.2%||7%||2.2%|
|Freeze-dried beef liver||65%||5%||4%||1%||7%||18%|
In comparison, seal treats are superior because of their high protein content and very low carbohydrate (sugar) content.
In summary, most dog owners do not recognize that a high carb diet leads to an inefficient immune system and can lead to different diseases. Good quality ingredients such as seal meat are essential for your dog to remain energetic and satisfied every day. 😉
